Plains Biome

The plains biome is one of the most common biomes in Minecraft, and it holds several useful resources for players. An abundance of flowers can be found here, widespread patches of grass as well as the occasional tree. The relatively flat landscape allows players to easily find level ground on which to build structures. Cows, pigs and chickens spawn here more often than many other biomes. This is also one of the few areas where horses can spawn. Villages often generate within this type of biome.   -Minecraft Wiki

Navigation

It's vital that you become confident with controlling your avatar. We've developed a series of tasks in the game to assist you in developing your ability. Below, you will find a picture representation of the keys on your keyboard you will use to move. Think of them as a compass you are using to move north, south, east and west. Don't get dizzy....and don't fall of a cliff! Your children will only laugh at you!

Your mouse controls your avatars ability to look around the world. Imagine that it is the neck turning your head. Experiment by moving your mouse around to view the world around you.

You can also move your keyboard and mouse at the same time to move and look in various directions. Try it out! Just like anything else, moving around in this virtual world will lots of practice.  However, before you know it you'll be building palaces in the sky!  Your kids will be very impressed.

Here are some other useful key shortcut commands:

  • W = Walk forward

  • S = Walk backward

  • A = Walk to the left

  • D = Walk to the right

  • Space bar = jump

  • Mouse = Face direction

  • Double tap + hold W = Run

  • T or / = Open chat dialogue

  • F2 = Take screenshot

  • F5 = Toggle between first person and thrid person camera angle

Orientation

Just like a normal day in the real-world, Minecraft has a day and night cycle. The sun follows a 10 - 12 minute path, rising in the East and setting in the West. The moon travels a similar route. During your first time playing, there are a couple things to note: (1) You will spawn near a wooded area, (2) Listen for the music playing (different melodies play at different times of day), (3) Locate  the sun and determine where North, South, East, and West are (this will also help you from losing your shelter you create), and (4) the sun is your timer, just by looking at the orientation of the sun, you will know how much time is left in the day.
